Testosterone levels decline naturally with age but in some people, levels drop earlier or more significantly than expected, causing a range of symptoms that are frequently attributed to stress, poor sleep or ‘getting older’. A private testosterone blood test gives you a clear, accurate measurement so you can understand what is actually happening in your body.
This test is particularly recommended for:
The NHS does not routinely test testosterone unless symptoms are severe and a clinical case is clearly established. A private testosterone test gives you direct access to your result without the wait.

Our private testosterone blood test measures both Total testosterone and Free testosterone the two markers that together give a complete and clinically meaningful picture of your testosterone status. Testing Total testosterone alone, as the NHS typically does, can miss cases where testosterone is bound to proteins in the blood and unavailable for the body to use.

Your testosterone blood test result will not arrive as a raw data sheet. Every result is sent to you and your report will explain exactly what your numbers mean for your health.
Your written report will cover:
• Whether your Total testosterone falls within the healthy range for your age and sex
• Whether your Free testosterone is optimal even if your Total testosterone appears normal
• What your SHBG level indicates about the availability of testosterone in your body
• Whether your results are consistent with testosterone deficiency (hypogonadism) or androgen excess
• Recommended next steps including whether a follow-up with your GP, an endocrinologist, or a TRT specialist would be appropriate
Many patients find that their testosterone results explain symptoms they have been experiencing for months or years fatigue, low mood, reduced drive and difficulty maintaining a healthy body composition that had previously been attributed to lifestyle or stress.

Getting a testosterone test on the NHS is not straightforward. GPs are advised to test only when symptoms are significant, and even then, many patients report being told their levels are ‘normal’ based on a Total testosterone reading alone without Free testosterone or SHBG being measured. Our private testosterone test gives you a complete picture, quickly, without a referral.

Total testosterone measures the full amount of testosterone in your blood, including the portion bound to proteins. Free testosterone measures only the biologically active fraction the testosterone your body can actually use. It is possible to have a normal Total testosterone reading while Free testosterone is low, which explains why many men feel symptomatic despite being told their results are ‘normal’. Our test measures both.
For the most accurate result, we recommend booking a morning appointment ideally between 7am and 10am. Testosterone levels follow a natural daily rhythm (diurnal variation), peaking in the morning and declining throughout the day. An afternoon test can produce a result that is 20–30% lower than your true morning peak, which can lead to misinterpretation.
Fasting is not required for testosterone testing. You can eat and drink normally before your appointment. However, if your test panel includes additional markers such as cholesterol, glucose or insulin, our team will advise you whether fasting is needed for those specific tests at the time of booking.
Most results are returned within 24–72 hours of your sample being taken.
Yes. Testosterone plays an important role in female health influencing energy, libido, mood and body composition. Women with suspected PCOS, hormonal imbalance, or persistent unexplained symptoms may benefit significantly from knowing their testosterone levels. Elevated testosterone in women is also a key marker in the diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome.
Common symptoms of low testosterone in men include persistent fatigue, reduced sex drive, difficulty building muscle, unexplained weight gain (particularly around the abdomen), low mood or irritability, poor concentration, reduced body hair, and in some cases erectile dysfunction. If you are experiencing several of these symptoms, a private testosterone blood test is a straightforward first step toward understanding the cause.
Yes. Your results report is a clinical document produced by a GMC-registered UK doctor and can be shared with your NHS GP, a private endocrinologist, or a testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) clinic to support further investigation or treatment planning.
